Part 30 - Fizzle Bang

April 22nd 2007 04:42
Ga Gantuar peered out the window at the Earth. ‘What a pretty place’, he thought. ‘I wonder if I should move the ship a little further away, something tells me this might be a dangerous orbit.’ He tried to drag his eyes away from the planet so he could go to the control panel and move the ship but, ‘No,’ he said to himself, ‘this view is too good to give up, I’ll do it later.’

That was when 3 missiles plunged into the heart of his ship and every molecule from the hull to the contents and passengers was broken down into its base elements forming a speedily expanding gas cloud that looked and sounded every bit like a major explosion. The results of a molecular missile strike.

I know there had been 6 missiles launched, but it really only took three to do the job required, the other three roared off into space, at Ru’s instruction, set to return to Earth at some future date.

Hu’s plan was a good one, but they were too late initiating it to be of any help to Ga and Lo.

The 6 superheated glass bottles of beer were gently taken up by La. His space suited hands providing suitable protection from the heat. Hu launched herself at La with super fast speed. She made contact and pushed him in the general direction of outer space. He was supposed to catch up with the missiles and throw the hot beer bottles them, this would cause them to veer drastically off course and crash harmlessly into the moon. It would seem there was little science in this plan, but with half a dozen bottles of beer in her system, Hu was thinking at relative speeds. While maths wasn’t her forte, she did have time to review the sums more than once.

Catapulted into space La could only assumed he was headed in the right direction and did nothing to confirm it. Seconds into his flight he fumbled with the hot beer bottles and they clanked then shattered in his arms. Beer exploded into the atmosphere raining down on the back yard of a house that belonged to a particularly poor and unhappy couple. Fortunately for the couple the husband sat in the back yard observing the stars with his mouth open at just the right moment for it to fill with beer. He drank in the heaven sent amber liquid. His mood was greatly improved so ventured he inside, found his wife and, in a series of completely selfless acts he did everything he could think of to make her happy. About 40 weeks later the woman gave birth to their first and only child. Their sadness a long forgotten memory. They named the baby Lawrence, to be called Larry by his friends, but later in life, he would be known only as The Spotlight Man - a powerful and ruthless player in Sydney’s Drag Performance Industry. But like the 3 missing missiles, I’ll tell you more about him later.

Needless to say, Ga and Lo Gantuar were killed in the accident, just like their daughter so many years before. After regaining control of his flight La returned to the ship. With one crisis out of the way, though it was a complete failure, he considered how he might salvage something of his marriage.

Inside the airlock La extricated himself from his space suit; his usual urgency to return to the privacy of his suite was missing. He found himself instead at the Observation Deck. This enormous room contained comfortable chairs so that one might observe the universe through windows that took up the entire external wall creating a viewing space more than 20 metres high and 40 metres wide.

Most of the DisQuientians had not bothered to come here since the crash. The room was at the front of the ship so instead of a view of the universe it provided only a view of the dirt in which they were buried. Over the years, during the odd boring moment, La visited the room. He looked at the dirt and wondered. Recently he had found an ant colony and claimed the inhabitants as pets. To distract himself from the pain of his aching heart he gave himself the task of naming each one.

Aa, was the name of the first ant he saw; Ab was the next and Ac the third. The familiar sound of Je clearing her throat ... his throat ... brought his attention back to matters at hand.

“Have you come to say goodbye?” La asked, keeping his eyes on Ad, the fourth ant.

“Why would I say goodbye?” Je stood close, scanning the dirt.

“Re left us when there was no one here for him to love; I expect you will want to do the same.”

“I’m not planning on leaving.”

La located Af and named her, “You cleared your throat, you have something to say?”

“We’re having a memorial on the Bridge for the Gantuar’s tonight. Please come.”

“Of course,” he said, forcing himself to look closely at Je’s face. Nothing had changed. Aside from a few minor physical alterations this man was still the woman he loved.

Hopeful, Je took one step closer to La, “I didn’t do it because I don’t love you. I did it because I was sick of lying about who I truly am. I want you to see and know the real me, but I don’t want you to change for me. I love you as you are.”

La took Je’s hand in his, “Pick any of the 5 sexes, I’ll always love you.”

Je smiled, “I believe we were interrupted at Step No. 18?”
